Why does the MMA algorithm take the integral form for solving the objective / constraint function of the topology optimization problem? What is the theoretical basis behind it?

COMSOL 5.5 uses the globally convergent version of the MMA optimization algorithm. The algorithm works the same for any optimization problem - nothing special is done for topology optimization.
