Heterogeneous Lithium-Ion Battery

This model describes the behavior of a lithium-ion battery unit cell modeled using an idealized three-dimensional geometry. The geometry mimics the structural details in the porous electrodes. Such models are referred to as heterogeneous models.

The modeling approach for heterogeneous models differs from typical battery models, such as the Newman model. In homogeneous models, averaged properties such as volume fractions, specific surface area, and effective transport properties are used to describe the porous structure. In heterogeneous models, the geometry describes the actual shapes of the pore electrolyte and electrode particles.

The presentation associated with the model compares the results from the Newman model with the corresponding ones for the heterogeneous model. Discharge and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy simulations are compared.
