Multiphysics Software Models Mean Flow-Augmented Acoustics in Rocket Systems

Sean R. Fischbach, Marshall Space Flight Center/Jacobs ESSSA Group, MSFC, USA

Historically, difficulties in modeling and predicting combustion instability have led engineers to costly physical testing, or even to scrap the system entirely. Sean Fischbach and the research team at NASA used the COMSOL Multiphysics® software to model chamber gas dynamics and the internal acoustics of rocket systems.
